What do home businesses in the UAE charge?

Nobody publishes this. Licensing authorities publish fees, delivery platforms publish nothing at all, and every pricing article about the UAE quotes retail bakeries and restaurants, which are not the same trade. So the figures below come from our own catalogue: every item a home business had listed and available on KLU on 22 September 2026, 596 of them, across all 7 emirates.

The median is the middle price, which describes a category better than an average does. One AED 480 dessert platter drags an average upwards; it does not move the middle. The quarter and three-quarter columns show where the bulk of a category sits: a quarter of items cost less than the first figure, a quarter cost more than the last.

CategoryCheapest quarter underMedianDearest quarter overShare of items
CakesAED 91AED 152AED 18010%
Gathering boxesAED 100AED 150AED 18018%
SweetsAED 30AED 80AED 15943%
BakesAED 18AED 55AED 11032%

BowlsAED 27AED 30AED 352%
DrinksAED 20AED 27AED 3226%

Items carry more than one category where they belong in more than one, so the shares add up to more than 100%.

Which categories do home businesses actually sell?

Sweets lead by a distance. Just over 4 in 10 items are sweets of some kind, and about a third are bakes, which overlap heavily: a cinnamon roll is both. Drinks are the third biggest group at about a quarter of items, which is mostly speciality coffee and matcha, a category that barely existed in home businesses three years ago.

Savoury is the minority. Hot meals are about 14 in every 100 items, and cooked bowls about 2. That runs against the assumption that selling food from home means cooking lunches. Most of this trade is dessert, coffee and baking, which travel better, keep longer and do not depend on someone being hungry at a fixed hour.

Gathering boxes are the interesting one: 18% of items, at a median of AED 150, which is 4 times the median item. These are the grazing and celebration boxes people order for a majlis, an office send-off or Eid, and they are where a small business makes a real margin on one order rather than 5.

Where in the UAE are home businesses selling?

Abu Dhabi leads, which surprises people who assume Dubai owns every new trade in the country. Why is not something a catalogue can answer. Both emirates run a licence aimed squarely at this trade, Mubdiah in Abu Dhabi and Intelaq in Dubai, and Abu Dhabi has pushed its one harder through the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council.

EmirateShare of home businessesThe licence there
Abu Dhabi39%Mubdiah
Dubai28%Intelaq
Sharjah9%Eitimad
Ajman9%Ajman home licence
Ras Al Khaimah7%Al Ghad
Fujairah5%Mashroui
Umm Al Quwain2%No published home licence

Figures are rounded, so they do not total exactly 100.

The northern emirates are thin, and the reason is not demand. It is that Umm Al Quwain publishes no home business licence at all, and Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah publish so little that a careful person cannot work out what they owe before applying. People do not start a business they cannot price.

What does this mean if you are setting your own prices?

Use the table as a sense check at the end, never as a starting point. Price from your own costs first: ingredients, packaging, the courier, your hours, and the commission on whatever you sell through. Our pricing guide works through a whole cake line by line, ingredient by ingredient.

Then look at where you land:

  • Below the cheapest quarter. You are probably not paying yourself. That is the most common mistake in this trade, and it is invisible until a busy month leaves you with nothing.
  • Between the quarter marks. Normal. Your job is to be memorable rather than cheap, because at this price nobody is choosing on price alone.
  • Above the dearest quarter. Fine, but the pictures, the packaging and the story have to carry it. The people selling AED 180 cakes are not selling a better sponge, they are selling an occasion.

One more pattern worth knowing: the businesses that do best are rarely the ones with the longest menus. A tight list of things you make extremely well is easier to photograph, easier to buy from and far easier to produce on a busy Friday.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average price of a cake from a home business in the UAE?

The middle price is AED 152. A quarter sell below AED 91 and a quarter above AED 180. Sizes vary a great deal at the lower end, so compare the weight or the number of portions rather than the headline price.

Is it cheaper to order from a home business than a bakery?

Usually, for like with like. Retail bakeries in Dubai list plain whole cakes from roughly AED 140 to AED 290, while the middle price here is AED 152 for cakes that are typically made to order.

What sells best from a home business in the UAE?

By volume of what is listed, sweets, bakes and drinks. By value per order, gathering and celebration boxes, at a median of AED 150.

Do home businesses charge more in Dubai than in other emirates?

Not in a way the data supports. The differences between categories are far larger than the differences between emirates, and delivery cost, not the emirate, is what changes what a buyer pays.

Can I use these figures in my own article or report?

Yes. Cite KLU and the date, and link back to this page. The figures are a snapshot of one marketplace on 22 September 2026, not a survey of every home business in the country, and they should be described that way.
