Most people meet a home business on Instagram. A tray of luqaimat comes past on a reel, you send a message, you wait, a price arrives in a voice note, you transfer the money and then you hope. Plenty of good orders happen exactly that way. What none of them leave behind is a record: no price you can check later, no ingredient list, no agreed delivery time, and nothing to point at if the order does not turn up.
The rest of this guide is the other version, where you order the way you would from any shop. Four steps, and what each one costs you in money and in waiting.
How do you order from a home business in the UAE?
1. Find the business
Start from a category rather than a name. Cakes, drinks, gathering boxes, sweets and hot food are all separate rows, and each card belongs to a different business with its own address, its own hours and its own delivery area. That last part decides more than it sounds like it does: a seller in Al Barsha delivers a very different set of postcodes than a seller in Al Ain, so the list you see is filtered by where you are before you have chosen anything.
Sellers on KLU operate in all seven emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai carry the most, and Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain all have businesses of their own, which is the part that surprises people who assume this only works in the two big cities.
2. Read the menu before you commit
A storefront is a menu, not a bio. Every item carries a photograph, a description, an allergen note where the seller has added one, and a price you can read without asking for it. At the top sits the delivery fee and the earliest date the business can deliver, so the two questions that usually take a day of messages are answered before you add anything.
This is also the law rather than a courtesy. Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2023 requires anyone selling through a website, platform or app to determine the terms, conditions and details of the various stages of the sale, including the prices of the goods and the fees for logistics and digital payment services, and to make them publicly available there (Decree-Law 14 of 2023, Article 5). A price that only appears in a private message is not that.
Read the description properly on anything you are ordering for other people. Portion counts, box sizes and the number of flavours in a mixed box vary between businesses far more than they do between restaurants, because each one sets its own.
3. Pick the day and the time window
Home businesses cook to order, so almost nothing is instant. Instead of a courier arriving whenever the food is ready, you choose a date and a two hour window, and the seller's schedule decides which windows are open to you. A window that has already passed, or that falls outside the hours that business works, is closed rather than hidden, which tells you what the seller actually does instead of leaving you guessing.
4. Pay
Apple Pay, a credit or debit card, or cash to the driver at the door. Credit and debit cards remain the most used payment method in the UAE, and digital wallet use has grown from 41 per cent in 2020 to 53 per cent in 2024 (Khaleej Times, 21 May 2025). Paying on arrival stays on the list because it is the one people reach for on a first order from a business they have not used before.
What does it cost to order from a home business?
Less than the equivalent from a restaurant in most categories, and more than a supermarket version in all of them. The ranges below are the 10th to 90th percentile of what businesses on KLU list today, so they exclude the cheapest oddities and the one-off luxury boxes at either end.

On top of the items you pay the delivery fee, which the business sets and the storefront shows before you order. On KLU your first 3 orders have no delivery fee at all, applied automatically, with no code to enter.
What you will not see is a service fee or a markup on the item price. The seller keeps what they listed, minus KLU's 5% commission on completed orders and 2% card processing, and those come out of the seller's side rather than being added to yours.
How long does an order take?
Faster than the reputation suggests. Of the 515 items listed today, 478 are ready inside 24 hours, 35 need one to two days, and 2 need longer than that. Drinks and snacks are usually an hour. Whole cakes are the genuine wait, at a day and often two, which is why a birthday order placed the same afternoon rarely works.
Delivery timing itself is worth a caution, and both of the numbers that matter come from Dubai Municipality. Its food safety requirements for deliveries, reproduced in the RTA's technical manual for delivery services run through electronic platforms, say the food delivery period should not exceed half an hour to maintain the quality of the food (RTA technical manual). Its consumer advisory turns the same half hour into advice to you, framing it as a reason to order from businesses nearby, and adds that cooked or chilled food should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours after you receive it (Gulf News, 24 March 2024). The practical reading: order hot food from a business close to you, and refrigerate anything you are not eating straight away.

What should you check before you order?
Four things, in the order they matter.
The delivery date, not just the day. A business that cooks to order is committing to a slot. If you need something for a specific hour, choose the window rather than assuming the earliest one is safe.
The ingredients, if anyone eating has an allergy. Sellers add allergen information themselves, and not every item has it. If it is missing on something that matters, ask before you order rather than after.
The portion count. Mixed boxes and gathering trays are described in pieces, not in servings, and the two are not the same number.
Whether the business is licensed. Licensing for selling food from a home is set emirate by emirate rather than nationally, and even who is eligible to hold the licence differs between them. That question deserves its own answer, which is in is home business food safe to order in the UAE.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order from a home business in another emirate? Usually not for hot or chilled food, because each business sets a delivery area and most keep it inside their own emirate. Shelf stable items travel further. The storefront shows you what it can reach before you order.
Do I have to pay by card? No. Cash on delivery is offered alongside Apple Pay and card payment.
Can I get it today? Often, for drinks, snacks and many hot dishes. Not for whole cakes, which almost always need at least a day.
Is there a minimum order? Not on KLU today. No business currently sets one, though a seller is free to.
What happens if the order does not arrive? Raise it with the business first, inside the order, so there is a record. If that goes nowhere, the Ministry of Economy takes consumer complaints on 800 1222, and the Department of Economic Development in your emirate receives them too (u.ae, consumer protection). A complaint about the food itself rather than the money goes elsewhere again, and the channel for each emirate is in is home business food safe to order in the UAE.
