How to order a celebration cake in Dubai

What a whole cake costs from a Dubai home business, how much notice to give, how to brief a custom cake, and what to do if it turns up wrong.

A cake is the one order where the date is not negotiable. The party is on Saturday, the candles go on at seven, and a cake that arrives on Sunday is missing rather than late. So settle when, and how big, before you message anyone.

How far ahead do you need to order a cake in Dubai?

Nothing is instant. All 60 home businesses with a live menu on KLU on 26 September 2026 take scheduled orders only, across all 7 emirates, and so do all 13 Dubai ones. Every order is booked into a slot the business agreed to.

That is not the same as a long wait. Of the 20 whole cakes listed by Dubai home businesses that day, 12 asked for less than a day's notice: 1 an hour, 10 at 2 hours, 1 at 4. The other 8 wanted 24 hours (2 of them) or 28 (6), the longest on any Dubai whole cake. UAE-wide: 33 whole cakes from 11 businesses, 1 hour to 50 hours, middle figure 24.

So the mistake is rarely ordering too late, it is assuming a cake turns up whenever you are ready for it. Weekends and Eid fill the slots a business has, and a custom design is a conversation first. One Dubai retail bakery charges 50% for changing the delivery date less than 72 hours before the confirmed time (it is named in Sources); a home business prints its notice on the item, and changing it is a message.

The first row covers every cake item a UAE home business had listed and available on 22 September 2026, slices and cupcakes included, not whole cakes only (what home businesses charge in the UAE). The second is what Dubai bakeries published in August (pricing cakes and food from a home business).

Narrow it to Dubai whole cakes and the middle price on 26 September 2026 was AED 155, over a range of AED 30 to AED 250. That is wider than the AED 170 to AED 220 we recorded in August, because more cheap small cakes have since been listed, and the bottom of it is a cake for four rather than a centrepiece.

Retail has not stood still either: on two public Dubai storefronts on 26 September 2026, a 1 kg to 2 kg chocolate ganache line ran AED 149 to AED 298, and a 6-portion chocolate cake AED 180, offered at AED 140.

How do you brief a custom cake so you get what you pictured?

Write the brief in one message. Only 3 of the 33 whole cakes listed on KLU on 26 September 2026 had customisation options set up as choices, so on almost every order the detail goes into an order note. Five things belong in it.

Portions, not inches. No UAE standard sets how many people a diameter feeds, and Dubai bakeries openly disagree: one publishes 6 inch as 8 portions, 8 inch as 12 and 10 inch as 18, while another, in our pricing guide, sells that 8 inch as 8 to 10. Give a headcount.

Flavour, in three parts. Sponge, filling, covering. "Chocolate" can mean a cocoa sponge with buttercream or a dense ganache cake, which are different prices and different cakes in a hot car.

Allergens, as a direct question. Only 5 of the 62 available cake listings on KLU carried allergen information on 26 September 2026, so assume it is not on the page and ask. A Dubai business preparing food works under the Municipality's Food Code, which requires food service establishments to declare the common allergenic ingredients they use, and names 9: crustaceans, peanuts, soybeans, tree nuts, sesame seeds, fish, egg, milk, and gluten and the cereals containing it. Where food is prepared for immediate consumption and exempt from labelling, it must be displayed or given on request (Food Code 2013, section 3.4.3, via the 6 December 2025 Wayback snapshot). The Municipality publishes the 2013 edition; a Food Code 2.0 has been in draft since at least 2023, reported as naming 14 allergens and in the final stages of approval (Khaleej Times, 7 June 2023), with no adoption date anywhere official. If the list matters medically, confirm the current edition on 800900.

A reference photo, and what you like about it. Name the part: the colour, the drip, the flowers, the shape. Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2023 requires a digital merchant to publish prices and terms, avoid misleading descriptions, and supply goods in accordance with the announced specifications (Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Articles 5 and 6). Agreeing it in writing is what makes that usable.

The name, spelled out. Letter by letter if it is unusual, and say whether you want it piped in English or Arabic. It is the cheapest mistake here to prevent and the only one nobody can fix on the day.

Should you collect the cake or have it delivered?

Often the choice is not yours. Of the 4 Dubai home businesses listing a whole cake on 26 September 2026, 3 deliver only and 1 offers both; UAE-wide, 7 of the 11 were delivery only. On KLU an order is pickup or delivery depending on what the business offers, and the buyer pays the fee.

If you do collect: the flat floor of the boot, the air conditioning running, straight home. Dubai's forecast high on 21 September 2026 was 45C (Khaleej Times), and the same paper reports a parked car reaching 60C or more inside, a figure it attributes to nobody in particular.

The official number is the clock. The Food Code calls 5C to 60C the temperature danger zone and says high risk cold food intended for immediate consumption must not be held there more than 4 hours including the time of preparation, then should be discarded (section 3.3, same snapshot). A cream or buttercream cake is that food, and the load-bearing words are "including the time of preparation": the clock did not start when you picked it up. The Municipality also advises ordering close enough that food arrives within half an hour, and not leaving cooked or refrigerated food at room temperature more than two hours after you receive it (Gulf News).

If it is delivered, ask what the cake travels in. 16 of the 33 whole cakes listed that day were flagged as needing a car rather than a motorbike, and the rest carried no flag either way, which is not the same as being fine on a bike. There is a transport rule, stricter than most couriers manage: the same Code says high risk and perishable food needing temperature control must be carried in equipment holding it at or below 5C, in vehicles approved by the Food Control Department (sections 3.6.1 and 3.6.2). It sets no maximum journey time, only that the time be as short as possible. So settle the how with the business rather than assuming a cold bag is there.

How do you check the business is licensed?

Quickly, and the tool is free to use, as our Dubai ordering guide sets out. Invest in Dubai runs a public tool, Search License Information, that takes a licence number, a Dubai Unified Licence number or the business name. Ask a seller for the number and run it before you pay. The live tool blocked direct access when checked, so the search field is confirmed via the 1 September 2026 Wayback snapshot.

It answers one question: whether a Dubai trade licence exists and is current. Preparing food at home needs a second approval from Dubai Municipality's Food Safety Department, which the search does not cover. Which of three Dubai bodies handles which problem is in that guide too.

What can you do if the cake turns up wrong?

Two federal texts point in opposite directions, and it is better to know that in advance.

Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2023 gives you a right to return or exchange goods bought online that arrive defective, incomplete, damaged or contrary to the merchant's description, or so late they are impossible to use. The very next clause forfeits the right to return them and get a refund where they are foods that expire within three weeks (Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Article 7). A cake is plainly such a food, and nothing says which clause wins.

The consumer protection regulations complicate it further. Cabinet Resolution No. 66 of 2023 lists "goods sold are neither returned nor exchanged" among the terms a seller may not impose, then excepts two things: goods subject to rapid perishability, unless proved spoiled or expired for human consumption on the date of purchase, and goods manufactured according to specifications determined by the consumer, which carries no such exception (Article 34, item 10, via the 20 April 2025 Wayback snapshot, since the legislation portal blocks direct access). A custom cake sits in both at once, and only the perishable limb carries the carve-out for goods proved spoiled. That is a third place these texts leave the reader without an answer.

So the body to ask is the Ministry of Economy and Tourism on 800 1222 (moet.gov.ae). In practice the route that works is a complaint rather than a return, and in Dubai it splits: consumerrights.ae for the money, Dubai Municipality on 800900 for the food.

Before any of that, message the business with a photo of what arrived and the thread where the brief was agreed. Most of these are a business that would rather fix it than argue, and the rest are easier to escalate when the brief, the price and the time are in writing.
