Order from a Sharjah home business: check it first

SEDD publishes eight binding terms a Sharjah home business accepts, plus a licence search that needs no sign-in and takes a trade name. Check before you pay.

Elsewhere the licence check is the hard part and the complaint route easy to find. Sharjah runs the other way round. The general version is in how to order from a home business in the UAE; the Abu Dhabi checks differ.

What has a Sharjah home business agreed to before it takes your order?

SEDD's digital portal publishes a block of rules headed "Binding Terms & Conditions for Practising a Home-Based Activity", governing what it calls the Eaatmad licence. We read the eight items on 3 October 2026 from the portal's published English and Arabic translation files, because the page renders in the browser and its source carries no text.

Two change how you order. Term 4: "To comply with a pre-order system whereby orders must be placed before customers arrive at the residential premises where the activity is conducted." The Arabic file carries the same requirement, so this is no translation artefact. Term 8 asks for "reasonable and diligent efforts to provide an order delivery service".

Term 2 bars any signboard or promotional material "on the house or within its surrounding area", and term 3 bars turning the home's residential use into a commercial one, which is why the seller looks invisible. Term 7 confines trading to working hours the competent authorities specify, which no page we could read names; ask SEDD on 80080000.

The holder accepts the consequences of any violation or neighbour's complaint, and that SEDD may cancel the licence. Some activities need the neighbours' written consent too. The terms page says only "Your activity requires a Neighbours Approval", while SEDD's service guide names the trigger as "Neighbor approval for food activities" and mentions no other. The form is a Word document SEDD hosts under a filename dated 13-8-2026, where the holder's own undertaking carries the legal responsibility for any violation or harm and the four neighbours sign only that they do not object. Which activities trigger it is not published in full; ask on 80080000.

Can you check a Sharjah home business licence yourself?

Yes, and without a sign-in. SEDD's "Search For Licence" service carries no authentication guard in the portal's own route table, unlike the twelve paths that do, consumer protection among them. The search is open; the complaint route is the guarded one.

The form takes a numeric "license Id", a "Trade Name (Arabic)" and a "Trade Name (English)", which matters, because a storefront name is usually all a buyer has. A result prints both names, status, licence type, activities, dates and a location. Read the activities line twice: a licence can be current and not carry the activity being traded on. Whether home licences sit in that dataset we could not settle, so ask SEDD on 80080000 and never read an empty result as proof a seller is unlicensed.

Two routes lead here. SEDD is blunt that "a standard business license requires a physical business location", and that the home options are "a business license (for citizens) or an e-commerce license". The citizens' one is the home licence, for UAE nationals, with cooking among its activities. Its seven conditions appear only in the Arabic FAQ, which is why pages written from English sources get Sharjah wrong: a UAE national resident in Sharjah, at least 18, with Ruwad membership, among them. Only archived fees exist, in our guide to the Sharjah home licence for sellers.

Residents who are not UAE nationals take the e-commerce route, covered in the Sharjah options for residents. Whether such a holder may prepare food at home is unanswered: SEDD calls that licence virtual with no physical location, and the municipality's home-food procedure covers the home licence only. Ask SEDD on 80080000 and the Health Control and Safety Department on 065068465.

What has to be true before a Sharjah home business sells food?

Food approval is the municipality's job, set out in Sharjah City Municipality's Food Control Section's Procedures Manual, cover dated 2019, under Federal Law No. 10 of 2015 on food safety. Its eight-step route puts the Section's final approval before SEDD issues the licence, not after. The holder passes a food safety course on the Sharjah Food Safety Program, everyone at the production site holds an occupational health card, and a written undertaking names the items to be produced, so the product list is a document the municipality holds.

The physical conditions are measurable too: the room where food is prepared needs its own door, separate from the villa's main entrance, the ground floor, "not less than 15 m2". Large quantities are "not allowed unless appropriate spaces and tools are available", which makes asking about a 200-portion order fair rather than rude. The municipality logged 12,256 food inspections in the first quarter of 2025 and closed two warehouses.

Two official documents disagree on unannounced entry. The manual requires contact numbers "to enable inspectors to enter the site at any time", and visits where inspectors photograph violations and take samples. SEDD's archived conditions, in the snapshot of 26 October 2020, allowed those inspections only after its own specialists approved and the people in the home were asked. The live terms say nothing about inspection, so that restriction is neither restated nor withdrawn. Put it to the municipality on 065068465 and SEDD on 80080000.

None of it can be verified the way the licence can: no public tool covers the Section's approval, the course certificate or the health cards, and no Sharjah hygiene rating scheme surfaced, though the municipality's English pages returned HTTP 500 and 401 to us. Ask the seller to show the approval, and ring 065068465 if the answer is evasive.

How should the food reach you?

Sharjah follows a federal instrument here, Ministerial Decision No. 577 of 2013 and its unified guide to food transport. The clause that matters most covers two wheels: "thermally insulated and properly closed containers should be used when transporting prepared food by motorcycles or bicycles".

Here the two authorities pull against each other. SEDD's term 8 obliges the holder to try to provide a delivery service. The municipality's food transport permit requires a valid trade or industrial licence, the vehicle registration card, the driver's health card, warehouse or attested lease premises, and an inspector's vehicle test. A home licence holds none of those as described, and the manual's home licence section never mentions delivery. One authority expects the seller to try to deliver; the other's permit presupposes premises the seller does not have.

Nothing published says what Sharjah asks of a courier collecting from a home business, and no authority publishes a delivery radius or time cap, nor confirmed to us that none exists. Ask the Health Control and Safety Department on 065068465.

What happens if a Sharjah order goes wrong?

This is the weak side of ordering here. The consumer protection complaint sits behind a login offering "Sign in with UAE PASS" and "Please login to use this service", yet the same flow then sends a one-time code to a phone or an email, so whether you can file without UAE PASS we could not confirm. Ask on 80080000 before you need it.

The form carries two product categories, "Electrical appliances and mobile phones" and "Foodstuffs", and no service category, so a mobile beauty appointment, the kind SEDD's Arabic FAQ permits, sits awkwardly here. Five gate questions follow; SEDD publishes its refusal wording for three.

What SEDD asks before accepting a complaintWhat SEDD says if the answer is no
"Do you have an invoice""Sorry, we cannot assist you due to the lack of an invoice."
"Is there a warranty and validity period""Sorry, we cannot assist you due to the lack of a warranty for the product."
"Does the defendant have a valid license in the Emirate of Sharjah""Sorry, we cannot assist you due to the lack of a site in the emirate. You may have to file a lawsuit with the court."

The third row is why the licence check belongs before the payment: in SEDD's own words, an unlicensed seller puts you in court instead of a complaint queue, and the Arabic file carries all three refusals in the same words. You are contacted within two business days, and the success screen says "The service is free", yet the flow also carries a "Site visit fee" field and nothing says when it applies or who pays.

So keep the invoice: an online seller anywhere in the UAE must provide "a clear digital invoice for every transaction" under Federal Decree by Law No. 14 of 2023 on Modern Technology-Based Trade. Ask for it when you order, not when you complain. Whether you then have a refund or cooling-off right on a distance food purchase, we cannot tell you from an official source. SEDD's copy of Cabinet Decision No. 66 of 2023, the consumer protection law's executive regulation, is a 9.9 MB scan that yielded 90 bytes of text, and the federal legislation portal returned 403. Take no cooling-off period from a page that does not quote the text; ask the Ministry of Economy and Tourism on 800 1222, which also takes WhatsApp.

Who do you ring, and about what?

Licences, violations and whether a seller is trading legally go to SEDD on 80080000, which both FAQs describe as free and answered 24 hours. One number is genuinely unsettled: both FAQs give 0097192083333 as the international line while Contact Us gives 0097165122222 for all six SEDD offices, and 09 is the east coast code rather than Sharjah city's 06.

Food goes to the municipality, where ownership has moved. The 2019 manual puts the Food Control Section under the Public Health Department; a municipality news item of 30 April 2025 quotes the Director of the Health Control and Safety Department on that Section's work, the more current structure. Its Contact Us page lists a Food Control Department on the shared 065656000 switchboard beside that department on 065068465, open 07:30 to 15:30. The structure resolves in favour of 2025; the numbers do not resolve at all.

For a seller in Khorfakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn or Al Dhaid we cannot say who approves the food: only Sharjah City Municipality's procedure is published, and its manual defines "Municipality" as that body alone, although SEDD has branches in all four. Ask SEDD which municipality covers the address. One blank is ours, not Sharjah's: sedd.ae/web/cp/home, the page u.ae's English pages give a Sharjah buyer, redirected to "Request Rejected" on 3 October 2026, so it is blocked to us rather than empty.

Frequently asked questions

Can you look up a Sharjah home business by name rather than licence number?

Yes. The form has an Arabic trade name field and an English one beside the numeric licence id, and no sign-in guard. Whether home licences sit in the dataset we could not confirm, so a blank result proves nothing on its own.

Why will a Sharjah home business not let you come and browse first?

Because the rule says so. Term 4 requires a pre-order system, with orders placed before the customer arrives, and terms 2 and 3 bar any signboard and any commercial change to the home.
