Can a home business use a personal bank account in the UAE?
There is no published federal law or Central Bank rule that this research could find stating that a freelance permit or home business licence holder is barred from using a personal account for business income. What exists instead is bank-level policy: each bank runs its own know-your-customer and anti-money-laundering checks, and how strictly a given branch applies them to a personal account receiving repeated business transfers varies. The UAE Central Bank's Consumer Protection Regulation says commercial banks can open accounts for retail customers but must follow the regulation's own standards; it does not set a specific rule for freelancers.
In practice, many people running a licensed home business for a while do use a personal account, especially in the first year when transaction volumes are low. The risk is not a fine for breaking a law. It is that a bank flags an account for unusual activity, asks questions, or in a worse case restricts it, if personal-account transfers start looking like a business receiving payments from many different people. A dedicated business account avoids that question entirely, because the account is opened for exactly that purpose.
If you are unsure, this is a question for your own bank's relationship manager or call centre, not a rule you can look up once and rely on. Policies differ by bank and can change.
What documents do UAE banks usually ask for?
Every bank publishes its own list, and a freelance or sole-establishment licence holder is not always treated the same as a full LLC. Based on what each bank publishes about its own products, the common thread across nearly all of them is a valid trade licence and an Emirates ID or passport for the account holder. Beyond that, the details differ.
RAKBANK's business current account page confirms one figure directly: a minimum average monthly balance of AED 25,000. The fuller document checklist is a separate matter. RAKBANK's downloadable-forms page, where that checklist should sit, loaded as an empty script shell with no readable list in this research pass, and the same was true of an archived snapshot of that page, so none of the following could be confirmed on RAKBANK's own site. Third-party summaries describe the requirements as a valid trade licence, a Memorandum of Association where the business is an LLC, Emirates ID or passport for authorised signatories, proof of a business address such as an Ejari certificate or utility bill, proof of source of income such as bank statements or a VAT return, and a processing time of around 2 business days once paperwork is complete. Treat that list as a starting point only, and confirm the exact requirements and timeline with RAKBANK directly.
Mashreq's NEOBiz digital account lists a trade licence, Memorandum of Association, a board resolution where one applies, proof of the company's address, identity documents for partners, and bank statements where relevant. Mashreq advertises opening an account in a day, and its Pro and Pro Plus tiers both advertise no minimum balance, at AED 99 and AED 199 a month.
Emirates NBD's business account pages describe a "Business Banking Proprietor" package aimed at sole proprietors and the self-employed, and secondary summaries describe requirements including a valid trade licence, Emirates ID or passport of shareholders, and a tenancy contract as proof of address, plus a preference for licences with meaningful validity left before they expire. The bank's own pages did not return a clean, independently quotable checklist in this research pass, so treat this as a starting point and confirm the exact current list with Emirates NBD directly.
ADCB's own business account pages returned a blocked response on direct fetch during this research, the same way some other bank pages in this guide did. Secondary summaries describe a trade licence, an MOA for LLCs, a board resolution, and around six months of remaining licence validity, but none of that could be checked against ADCB's own wording. Confirm directly with ADCB before relying on any of it.
Wio, a UAE digital bank, offers an account called Wio Creators aimed at freelancers and independent professionals. Eligibility is a valid freelancer permit, or a trade licence limited to specific creative industries rather than any UAE trade licence, with no minimum balance beyond a monthly plan fee after any promotional period, and an account that opens without a branch visit. Wio's own pages returned a blocked response on direct fetch during this research, so confirm which activities currently qualify by checking wio.io yourself.
Do banks require a minimum balance?
This is where UAE banks genuinely differ, and it is worth comparing before you pick where to open an account, since a minimum balance you cannot maintain becomes a monthly fee instead.
| Bank | Account type | Minimum balance (as published) |
|---|---|---|
| RAKBANK | Business Current Account | AED 25,000 average monthly balance |
| RAKBANK | RAKstarter | Zero balance, no ledger or minimum balance fee |
| Mashreq | NEOBiz Pro / Pro Plus | No minimum balance; AED 99 or AED 199 monthly fee |
| Wio | Wio Creators | No minimum balance reported; monthly plan fee after any promotional period, unconfirmed on Wio's own site |
| Emirates NBD | Business Banking Proprietor | Not independently confirmed; check with the bank |
| ADCB | Sole establishment account | Not independently confirmed; check with the bank |
RAKBANK is the clearest contrast on its own site: its standard business current account wants AED 25,000 sitting in the account on average each month, while its RAKstarter product, aimed at startups, has none. That is one bank running two different products for two different stages of a business, which is worth knowing before you assume "RAKBANK requires AED 25,000" as a blanket fact.
This guide does not recommend one bank over another. The comparison above reflects what each bank's own published materials say where they could be found directly; where they could not, that is noted rather than guessed at.
Does a home business licence type change what a bank asks for?
Nothing found in this research suggests that Intelaq, the Freelancer Licence, or a home-based trader scheme gets a named, different set of bank requirements from any other freelance permit. Banks appear to ask for "a valid trade licence" generically, whichever emirate or scheme issued it, plus the standard identity and address documents. If a bank's checklist or fee schedule mentions Intelaq, eTrader or a comparable scheme by name, that is worth confirming with the bank directly, since it was not found published anywhere in this research.
Abu Dhabi's Freelancer Licence, issued through ADRA, costs AED 1,200 for six selected activities with extra activities at AED 100 each and requires the business to be structured as a sole proprietorship; its own published page makes no mention of a bank account as part of the licensing process itself. A separate scheme called Mubdiah, run by ADDED, is specifically for Emirati women and restricts the licence holder to a single activity practised from a specified home; the broader Abu Dhabi scheme open to citizens and residents generally is called Tajer Abu Dhabi, which does not require business premises for the first three years. See the Mubdiah licence guide for more on that route. Dubai's Intelaq licence, covered in our Intelaq guide, renews at AED 1,050 a year and is limited to UAE and GCC nationals resident in Dubai running a home-based project; the exact fee and document list for a brand-new Intelaq application, rather than a renewal, could not be confirmed on sme.ae's own issuance page in this research pass, so check that directly with Dubai SME.
Why does a bank account matter specifically for a KLU seller?
KLU pays sellers weekly to a UAE bank account by IBAN, as part of KLU being the merchant of record: buyers pay KLU, and KLU pays sellers on that weekly schedule. That is the practical reason a working, correctly entered bank account matters if you sell through KLU. It does not have to be a dedicated business account to receive that payout; KLU's own onboarding asks for a bank IBAN and account name for the weekly transfer, and treats the trade licence upload as optional rather than a gate. If your IBAN is missing, your orders simply do not get tagged into that week's payout run rather than being blocked outright.
Whether you should open a business account anyway is a separate question from what KLU requires, and it comes back to the earlier point: it depends on your own transaction volume, how your bank treats a personal account receiving regular transfers, and whether you want the account to hold a business's name for other reasons, such as separating your own money from the business's for your own bookkeeping.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a trade licence to open a UAE business bank account?
Every bank whose requirements could be checked in this research lists a valid trade licence as a core document, alongside an Emirates ID or passport for the account holder. Confirm the exact document list with your chosen bank, since some also ask for proof of address such as an Ejari certificate or a tenancy contract.
Can I just keep using my personal account once I get a home business licence?
There is no found law against it, but it is a decision to make with your own bank rather than assume is fine everywhere. Some banks are comfortable with a personal account receiving business transfers at low volume; others flag or restrict accounts that start to look like they are being used for a business. Ask your bank directly.
Which UAE bank has the lowest minimum balance for a home business?
Mashreq's NEOBiz tiers and RAKBANK's RAKstarter account both advertise no minimum balance requirement, charging a monthly fee instead in Mashreq's case. RAKBANK's standard business current account, by contrast, asks for AED 25,000 on average each month. Compare current terms directly with each bank, since fees and thresholds change.
Does KLU require me to have a business bank account?
No. KLU asks sellers for a bank IBAN and account name to send the weekly payout to; it does not specify whether that account has to be personal or business. That choice, and any bank's requirements around it, sit with the seller and their bank.
What happens if I do not add my IBAN on KLU?
Your orders stay in the payout pool untagged rather than being blocked, so add your IBAN as soon as you can to be included in that week's transfer.
